Grant Williams, Dean Nicholson, Lorin Nicholson and John Eder get some training on their bikes
Two brothers who are blind will soon create Australian history when they ride tandem pushbikes more than 4000km across Australia’s harshest terrain.
On March 29, Brisbane-based siblings, Lorin and Dean Nicholson, will leave Perth on an epic journey across the Nullarbor that will wind up in Sydney a month later.
Their aim is to raise vital funds for Vision Australia, the nation’s leading provider of blindness and low vision services, and generate awareness of the significant abilities of people who are blind or have low vision.
“This ride will be a dream come true for my brother and I and it will bring us a great sense of accomplishment,” said Mr Lorin Nicholson.
“But it means so much more to us than that. According to a report by Vision Australia more than 63% of Australians who are blind who want to work are unable to find meaningful employment.”
“Dean and I want to challenge the public’s perception and encourage employers to give people who are blind or have low vision a go. We want to show the nation that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.”
According to Vision Australia’s CEO Mr Gerard Menses, there are more than 300,000 Australians who are blind or have low vision and that figure is set to double by 2020.
“This growing statistic means that Vision Australia, now more than ever, relies on the generous support of people like Lorin and Dean, to raise awareness and generate funds so that we can provide essential services for people who are blind or have low vision,” said Mr Menses.
“I want to encourage people to show their support for Lorin and Dean and help Vision Australia support more people who are blind or have low vision to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.”
Virgin Blue Airlines, Optus Country, Cannondale Cycles, Bowdens Group, Water & Carbon, Kea Campers and ISP Media are proud sponsors of the expedition ‘Blind Courage’.
